I think that short stories have not sold as well as full-length fiction in the past because they tend to be smaller, shorter books – and some readers like great big fat stupid books by John Grisham and Dan Brown (which in the end they don’t read). My favourite short story writers are Raymond Carver, Tobias Wolff and the very early Roald Dahl stories that he wrote when he was a fighter pilot in World War Two and heavily influenced by Hemingway – who was also a great short story writer, as was F. Who are your favourite short story writers and why, in general, do you think it is a genre that never sells as well as the novel? So I love it and I would like to do it again. I love the format of the short story – “big truths in a confined space” somebody once said of the short story, and it is true. Being primarily a novelist and journalist, how did you find switching to the shorter form? Did you enjoy it and is it something you would considering returning to in the future? Your latest book, Departures is a short story collection.
